9 Mistakes That Could Be Wrecking Your Perfect Spring Hair Color

You found it—your gorgeous hair color for the season. Congratulations! Now you’ve got to concentrate on not ruining it because the hard truth is, well, it’s pretty easy to blow it. There are just so many sneaky mistakes that can take things from “Oh, you changed your hair color!” to “Oh…you changed your hair color…” So we turned to the experts to find out what you should nix from your routine to keep your mane as vibrant as the day you colored it. Haven’t found your new shade? These spring hair color ideas will help you discover that special one you want to settle down with (well, at least until the end of summer).

Mistake 1: Leaving Hair Bare at the Gym

Something to remember before you head to your next workout: “Sweat will cause your hair to get dry, which makes your color fade and become brassy,” says Corinne Adams, senior colorist at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon. The fix: Put some oil or conditioner—whatever you’ve got that’s moisturizing on hand—on your dry hair before you slick it back into a ponytail or other gym-going-style of choice. This is a true must for brunettes, including those in the on-trend jet-black category since they’re the most likely to turn brassy when dry.

Mistake 2: Washing It Too Quickly

The post-color smell may be tempting to wash out ASAP, but you really need to try to grin and bear it for at least two days. “When you get a color services your cuticle is shocked and opened. It needs 24 to 48 hours to reseal,” says Lucio Galano, lead colorist of the Fabio Scalia Salon in New York City. Shampoo or rinse right away and you’ll be kissing some of your color molecules goodbye. This is especially important when using a toner or gloss, as neither of them soaks as deeply into your hair as dye does.

Mistake 3: Playing the Same Part

If you always part your hair in the same place, over time the sun will fade your color right along the divide, says Adams. This is a big no-no, especially if you’re going tortoiseshell (A.k.a. the new way to ombré), as keeping your roots darker is key to pulling off that look. So switch it up when you’re spending time outdoors. Or toss it in a tight bun, which gives you the bonus benefit of avoiding scalp burns.

Mistake 4: Not Protecting It in the Sun

Remembering to apply a product with UV filters is a great start for protecting your tone, but just like on your body, it needs to be reapplied when you’re spending hours in the sun, says Adams. Mistake 5: Not Color-Correcting

“Obviously your hair is more exposed to the sun in the summer months, so it turns it brassy faster than other times of the year,” says Adams. To avoid this, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo every other week or think back to art school and use tones opposite the unwanted ones in your hair to counteract them.
