I don't want this to be a flame forum. Rather something that we can present articles to each other from sources in the U.S. and M.E. and discuss. It does not have to be I/P. I can be about Lebanon, or Iran, or Saudi Arabia or what have you. Also have fun... If you have a great story from the region or what not - let's have it.
IMPORTANT !!! I just saw this video and the lyrics really struck home It is a song by Matisyahu:
I just saw this video and the lyrics really struck home
It is a song by Matisyahu:
So... Here are the articles and salient points, I think could be discussed. Please chime in with some of yours.
I choose these articles:
I am Gilad, son of Aviva and Noam Shalit, brother of Hadas and Yoel, who lives in Mitzpe Hila. My identification number is 300097029. Today is Monday, September 14, 2009. As you can see, I am holding in my hand today's edition of the newspaper Palestine, September 14, 2009, published in Gaza.
(Close-up of newspaper so the date becomes clearly discernable)
I read newspapers in search of information about me. I hope to find some kind of information indicating that my release and return home is imminent. I have been waiting and hoping for a long time for the day that I am released.
I hope that the current administration, headed by Benjamin Netanyahu won't waste this opportunity to achieve a deal, and as a result I will finally be able to realize my dream and be released.
I want to send my regards to my family and to tell them that I love them and miss them very much, and pray for the day that I will see them again.
Dad, Yoel and Hadas, do you remember the day you came to visit me at my base in the Golan Heights, on December 31, 2005, which, if I'm not mistaken, is known as Revaiyah Bet?
We took a tour around the base and you took my picture atop the Merkava tank, and on one of the old tanks at the entrance to the base. We then went to a restaurant in one of the Druze villages, and on the way, we took each other's pictures on the side of the road with the snow capped Hermon Mountain as our backdrop.
I want to tell you that I feel well, in terms of health, and the Mujahideen, of the Iz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, are treating me wonderfully. Thank you very much, and goodbye.
(Shalit stands up briefly and video ends
the video of Shalit is encapsulated in the article.
Of course instead of anything positive happening here Ismail Hanieyah gets up in front of a crowd and says:
Hamas Gaza chief Ismail Haniyeh said on Friday that a deal exchanging Palestinian prisoners for a videotape of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit was a 'triumph' of the armed resistance against Israel.
Yeah, I suppose Cast Lead and the blockade are another "truimph" of Armed Resistance. Has it ever occured to this guy to stop talking smack for five minutes and actually talk about peace.
Rather than saying something along the lines of "Well we were successful in NEGOTIATING for these 20 women's release" instead it is, (to paraphrase) - "yeah - look at what good armed resitance did". Never mind that people in Gaza are going hungry or being left in the cold, or any other horror because of that "armed resistence" instead of negotiation.
Then there is this:
President Obama is in no mood for Stall tactics from Teheran.
Obama also stressed that "we're not interested in talking for the sake of talking," and warned that "if Iran does not take steps in the near future to live up to its obligations, then the United States will not continue to negotiate indefinitely, and we are prepared to move toward increased pressure."
Iran will have two weeks, Obama said, to follow through on the commitments Western officials announced following the seven-way Geneva meetings, the first in which the United States held substantive direct discussions on the Iranian nuclear program with Teheran.
and from the article - this from the RUSSIANS
Visiting Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victor Zubkov, when asked whether the revelations of the facility would alter Russia's so-far reticent position on sanctions, told The Jerusalem Post, "There has been no proof yet or confirmation, and we need to verify and know what has been done, and since there has not been enough proof and evidence, we have to work on that. I think the rumors might be exaggerated. However, a strong monitoring mechanism should be in place."
Still, Zubkov stressed that
"we in Russia cannot accept in any way that Iran could possess nuclear weapons. That is totally unacceptable to us."
Is this a by-product of Obama's diplomacy regarding missle defense? That last sentence and the timing I think reflects a Quid pro Quo trade regarding eventual sanctions or more with the U.S. and/or NATO.
Let the discussions begin.
On thing obvious racism towards either Arab or Jewish posters is not welcome - please leave the bullshit at home. If you have nothing to say - don't say it.
