Natural beauty has been having a moment for quite some time now. From Gwyneth’s Goop to the fact that more of our favorite brands are committed to using natural ingredients in their products. The term, natural beauty, is no longer exclusively reserved for the crunchy, granola-type! However, there is definitely something to be said for really bringing it back down to basics, and using products you can find in your hippie grocery store as a beauty treatment . Case in point: Apple Cider Vinegar. You’ve probably heard rumors of all the great stuff it claims to help with, and we’re here to tell you that it’s all true!
You can pick up organic apple cider vinegar at your local grocery or online, and lucky for us it’s super affordable! This one is $4.09.Braggs
There are tons of options when it comes to how you can use ACV (as the cool kids call it) and all of them are good for you. There’s a reason it’s been used for centuries, and it goes beyond just cleaning and cooking purposes — though it’s great for that too! ACV has been proven to lower blood sugar, fight diabetes, aid in weight loss, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Apple Cider Vinegar is made by fermenting the apple’s sugars. And once it’s vinegar, it can help kill pathogens, including bacteria. We all know that bacteria is a complexion killer, which is why it makes sense that ACV is a great remedy for acne or unbalanced skin. The first (and possibly most important) way to take care of our skin is from the inside out, so you better believe we’ll be drinking it as well as putting it directly on our faces!
If you’re a badass and can take down two plain spoonfuls of ACV, then, by all means, do it! For those of us who are slightly more sensitive to that vinegary taste and smell, simply mix a spoonful or two of ACV in a glass of water with lemon. The lemon cuts that vinegar and makes it a bit more palatable. On our wimpier days, we’ve been known to add a squirt of honey too!
If you want to use it as a toner, mix one part AVC to 2 parts distilled water and give it a good shake so it’s all evenly dispersed. Then, using a cotton ball or pad, apply it to clean skin. Be sure to avoid your precious eyeballs!
You might smell like a salad for a while, but it’ll be worth it for some glowy, healthy skin!
If you don’t care to use it as a toner, but still want to apply it generously on your skin, use the cotton ball in a circular motion, sort of like a scrub, and your skin will feel brand new! ACV is great for removing dead skin. It’ll also help with dark spots and hyperpigmentation, so you can focus on those areas if you don’t want to do your whole face. Leave it on for five minutes and then rinse off with cool water.
That way you’ll get all the good effects of the ACV without the day long smell or sensation, especially if you have particularly sensitive skin.
Incorporating Apple Cider Vinegar into your routine is a small but pretty effective way to make a difference in your skin’s overall appearance! And we love anything that is multi-purpose anyway. Good for our insides, as well as our outsides! What do you think — have you ever tried using ACV?
