Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has received a lot of criticism since the administration beefed up its immigration enforcement which led to separating migrant families at the southern border.
Some high-profile Democrats even called for ICE's abolition, a proposal Vice President Mike Pence vehemently criticized earlier this month.
The calls to abolish @ICEgov are not just outrageous - they're irresponsible. Abolishing ICE would mean more illegal immigration, more violent crime, more vicious gangs, more drugs, and more human trafficking. #IStandWithICE pic.twitter.com/MWTF4x8PG4

When the House of Representatives offered a resolution defending the agency, many Democrats were apparently too afraid to take a position.
House Republicans passed the bill on Wednesday along a 244-35 vote, with not nearly enough total votes to account for all 435 members of the chamber. As the Washington Examiner reported, 133 Democrats voted “present” — refusing to vote one way or another.
Mr. Speaker, calls to abolish ICE are reckless, dangerous to America’s national security interests, and threaten the well-being of our ICE agents. As a member of the Thin Blue Line, this attack on ICE is personal to me.
The men and women of ICE serve as America’s frontline defenders against human, drug, and weapons traffickers. ICE agents locate, arrest, and deport violent gang members and criminal aliens who threaten public safety.
Watch his remarks:
This wasn't the first time Democrats seemed to shy away from opposing ICE. After Democrats introduced a bill to abolish ICE, the legislation made it to a floor vote in the Republican-controlled chamber.
Apparently bluffing, some of the bill's Democratic sponsors even said they wouldn't vote for it.
Wednesday's vote came as President Donald Trump predicted that opposing ICE would cost Democrats in the 2018 midterm elections:
The Democrats have a death wish, in more ways than one - they actually want to abolish ICE. This should cost them heavily in the Midterms. Yesterday, the Republicans overwhelmingly passed a bill supporting ICE!

The two biggest opponents of ICE in America today are the Democratic Party and MS-13!

“The Democrats have a death wish, in more ways than one - they actually want to abolish ICE,” Trump tweeted on Thursday.
State politicians have pushed back on ICE's efforts as well, with New York's Cuomo calling their tactics unlawful.
Earlier this week, New York led a group of states in a lawsuit challenging the administration's decision to block grants for jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
