On Tuesday, dozens of documents were unsealed in the years-long legal war between Dr. Luke and pop star Kesha, who has accused the music producer of raping her and then refusing to let her out of her contract. He countersued her for defamation and breach of contract.
Now, it's a newly released deposition from that case that has people talking. In 2017, Lady Gaga had a fiery confrontation with Dr. Luke's legal team in which she defended Kesha and shamed his attorneys over the way they treated the "Tik Tok" singer, whose full name is Kesha Rose Sebert.
The focus of the deposition was the in-person and text conversations between Gaga, and Kesha regarding the alleged attack by Dr. Luke, whose legal name is Lukasz Gottwald, as well as whether Gaga knew of any details that supported Kesha's claim that he also raped Katy Perry. (Perry says he didn't.)
According to Gaga (who is identified in the transcript by her real name, Stefani Germanotta), Kesha told her that Dr. Luke "used power and manipulation to control her, and that she had been given a happy pill, that he offered her something and that she took it, and that she woke up and didn't remember."
Gaga, who herself is a victim of sexual assault, got emotional, tearing up as her attorney explained that discussing her friend's attack was triggering for her.
"I recall... her immense sadness and depression and fear," after the attack, Gaga recalled. "She was visibly very different than when I had seen her before, and – but I can't say specifically what exactly we spoke about. I just recall that it was emotional, and I wanted to be there for her."
Gaga added she had once seen Kesha in her underwear on a bed in Dr. Luke's home studio, and she was inclined to believe her friend.
The fireworks started when Christine Lepera, an attorney for Dr. Luke, asked if Gaga realized that the producer's reputation had been harmed by Kesha's allegations.
"If you are asking what my view is of his reputation, I made my view of him and his reputation when I saw her in that back room," Gaga fired back. "That was an image that – of something that happened to me, and I felt and knew in my heart that she was telling the truth, and I believe her."
