Mom Convinced Son He Had Cancer And Scammed Community, Cops Say

A despicable Jersey mom convinced her own son and his father that the child had cancer as part of a scam that bilked kind-hearted friends and family out of thousands, cops said.

Susan Stillwaggon, 35, of Pennsauken, was charged yesterday with theft by deception, endangering the welfare of a child, and using a child to commit a criminal offense.

She was also charged with forgery after allegedly sending her 9-year-old son’s school a letter on hospital letterhead claiming he had stage three Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The cold-hearted scheme duped the community into rallying behind the purportedly sick child.

“They had several fundraisers for the family – [including] little soccer kids selling cupcakes,” said Det. Sgt. Cheryl Duffy of the Pennsauken Police Department.

They even sold Lance Armstong “Livestrong” bracelets emblazed with the child’s name.

At least $3,500 was raised, cops said.

The husband was totally in the dark about the alleged scheme – and told cops that he truly believed his son was ill.

Stillwaggon didn’t say why she made up the lie, cops said.

“Her response to me was, ‘I need help,’” said Duffy.

Stillwaggon is currently hospitalized.

Her mother told a local news station that she had suffered a breakdown.
