Women In Scotland Can Now Take The Abortion Pill At Home

A campaign to allow women to take the abortion pill at home to avoid bleeding and pain in public has been launched.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is being called on to change the rules to enable women to take pills to terminate pregnancies at home.

The pill can take effect quickly, which can lead to distressing experiences for women such as suffering painful cramps or bleeding in cars or public transport as they travel home after taking the tablet.

Currently, women have to take the misoprostol pill in a clinic or hospital between 24 and 48 hours after a first pill, mifepristone, is ingested.

While it is regularly prescribed for home use in the case of miscarriages, women using it to terminate a pregnancy have to take it at a hospital or clinic. This means many women are forced to travel home while the drug is taking effect.

Today we published an open letter to @jeremy_hunt & @wgcs_health on behalf of Claudia - one of many women to be affected by the archaic legislation which prevents the #homeuse of abortion pills.
